Key takeaways

  • Tongits is a three-player rummy game played with a standard 52-card deck.
  • You win by emptying your hand (Tongits), by having the lowest points when the deck runs out, or by winning a called draw ("fight").
  • Dumping high cards early and tracking discards are the two habits that make the biggest difference.

Tongits basics

Tongits (also written Tong-its) is the Philippines' favourite rummy-style card game. Three players use a standard 52-card deck with no jokers. The goal is to form melds and get rid of your cards, or to finish with the lowest total of unmelded cards. The Tong-its article on Wikipedia gives a good history, and the card game reference site Pagat.com documents the house-rule variations.

Card values

CardPoint value
Ace1
2 to 10Face value
Jack, Queen, King10 each

Points only matter for cards still in your hand that are not part of a meld. Low is good.

Melds: sets and runs

  • Set (three or four of a kind): e.g. 7♥ 7♠ 7♦.
  • Run (straight flush): three or more cards in sequence in the same suit, e.g. 4♣ 5♣ 6♣. Ace counts low only.

You lay melds face up on the table. Once a meld is on the table, any player can add to it, which is called sapaw (laying off). Adding a 7♣ to someone's set of sevens is a classic sapaw.

How a turn works

  1. Draw one card from the stock, or take the top discard, but only if you immediately use it in a meld.
  2. Meld or sapaw as many cards as you like (optional).
  3. Discard one card to end your turn.

The dealer starts with 13 cards, the other players with 12, and the dealer begins by discarding.

Three ways to win

  1. Tongits: you meld or lay off every card in your hand. Instant win, usually with a bonus.
  2. Deck runs out: when the stock is empty, the player with the lowest hand value wins.
  3. Draw / fight ("laban"): at the start of your turn, if you have at least one meld down, you can call a draw. Opponents either fold or challenge. Lowest hand wins. A player who has been "sapawed" on that turn usually cannot call.

When to call a draw: quick checklist

  • Your hand total is 10 or lower.
  • At least one opponent has taken several discards (they are building melds and likely holding lower cards soon).
  • No one has laid off on your melds this round.

9 Tongits strategy tips

  1. Dump face cards early. J, Q and K are worth 10 each. Unless they are part of a near-complete meld, throw them early.
  2. Track the discards. If two 8s have been thrown, your pair of 8s is dead. Remembering this is the biggest skill edge in Tongits.
  3. Do not feed the next player. Watch what your left-hand opponent picks up and avoid discarding cards that fit their melds.
  4. Hold melds back sometimes. Laying melds down lowers your hand but also gives others sapaw targets. If you are close to Tongits, keep them hidden.
  5. Value runs over sets. Runs have two open ends for growth; a set of three can only gain one card.
  6. Count opponents' cards. A player with three cards left is a threat; play defensively.
  7. Use sapaw to block a draw. Laying off on an opponent's meld can stop them calling a fight on their next turn.
  8. Keep sessions short. Concentration falls fast. Two focused 20-minute sessions beat one tired two-hour session.
  9. Know your table stake. Start at the lowest stake while you learn the app's pace. See our responsible gaming tips.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Picking up a discard you cannot meld immediately (not allowed, and it reveals your plans).
  • Holding high pairs "just in case" while opponents race to Tongits.
  • Calling a draw with 20+ points in hand.
  • Playing when tired or chasing losses.

Frequently asked questions

How many cards does each player get in Tongits?

The dealer gets 13 cards and the other two players get 12 each. The rest form the stock pile.

What is sapaw in Tongits?

Sapaw means laying off one of your cards onto a meld that is already on the table, including an opponent's meld.

Is Tongits skill or luck?

Both, but skill matters a lot. Discard tracking, hand management and knowing when to call a draw make a measurable difference over many games.
